Background
Alexander Hamilton was born on January 11, 1755 or 1757 (the complete date is unknown) on an island in Britain, born as the illegitimate child of a married woman and her lover. When the husband found out, he threw her out, so she moved in with Hamilton's father. Hamilton's father abandoned them shortly, leaving the two homeless and without money. At age 11, Hamilton took a job to work as a clerk for an accountant- who was blown away by Hamilton's enthusiasm. The accountant persuaded a friend to help send Hamilton to America for an education. In 1773, Hamilton started to attend King's College (now known as Columbia), and discovered his love of politics. He quickly left school to join the Patriots. When the Revolutionary War began, Hamilton joined the New York Provincial Artillery Company
and fought in the battles of Long Island, White Plains, Trenton, Brandywine Creek, Germantown, and Princeton. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the Continental Army. Hamilton soon caught the attention of George Washington, and he snatched Hamilton up; making Hamilton his assistant. Hamilton wrote many important letters and documents for Washington, and married Elisabeth Schuyler. Hamilton begged Washington for some action, so Washington let him lead the Battle of Yorktown, very successfully. Hamilton resigned from his post as Washington's trusty assistant, and decided to follow his scholar dreams. He studied law, and soon became a very successful lawyer. Hamilton took on the Rutgers v. Waddington case in 1784, a case in which instigated the judicial review system. In 1787, Hamilton got many together to persuade them to help fix the Articles of Confederation, and really influenced the ratification of the Constitution. He wrote in the Federalist Papers, along with James Madison and John Jay. George Washington appointed Hamilton secretary of the treasurer when he won the presidency. Hamilton made a deal with Madison in 1790: allowing the capitol to be placed near the Potomac and gaining the assurance of Madison to stand up against policies that give the federal government more power. Hamilton stepped down from his position in 1775, leaving behind a stronger central government. In 1804, Hamilton accepted a duel with Aaron Burr, his arch-nemesis, resulting in him being shot. He was brought to New York, where he died a martyr from Burr's shot.
