Background
On April 13, 1743, Thomas Jefferson was born to one of the most prominent families in Virginia's elite group of farmers. He wrote a draft of the Declaration of Independence and became one of the most famous writers of the time. Jefferson was the first U.S. secretary of state in 1789. He bacame the second vice president in 1797. Jefferson was elected president in 1801, and resided as president during the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson was the life-long friend of James Madison, and they were political partners for their entire lives. Jefferson died on July 4th, of the year 1826.
