Background
Richard Henry Lee was born on January 20, 1732. He had a wealthy and well-known Virginia family. Much of his family worked in legislature, the military (as officers), and as diplomats. He went to school in England, and afterwards he was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses. He was also a delegate in the Second Congress, where he proposed the
colonies should separate from Britain and become its own country. At first, he disliked the Constitution, but he eventually changed his mind and even helped promote the Bill of Rights.
